Government Post Graduate College Sarkaghat was establised by himachal pradesh government as a multi faculty co-educational institute in april , 1985 to fulfill the educational needs of the rural people. The college was officially inaugurated on Dec. 8 , 1985 . Since its inception with an initial enrolment of 586 students the largest institution of higher learning in rural areas of the state . The college is recognized by UGC under 2f & 12B , and affiliated to the Himachal Pradesh University and today it has a strength of about 2200 students in all the three faculties of Humanities,
Science, and Commerce. The college has 49 sanctioned post of teaching staff.
In spite of many restraints, limitations, tough hilly terrain in the feeding areas and poor economy of the inhabitants this college has been able to carve a niche for itself in the arena of higher education. Thousands of boys and girls have graduatedfrom here and are serving the society in various capacities .Located at a distance of 60 kilomiters from the district town of mandi (H.P), this college is situated on the outskirts town , in a sprawling ground and lush green fields.It lies between Chandrakhri hill range in the NW and Maseran & Bhatoh hill range in the east at 31' 40' 43 " Northterm latitude and 76' 43' 36 " Eastern longitude .
With a campus spread over almost 20 acres of a landmass , the college has a big playground with facilities for the entire major outdoor games. In infrastructure facilities, we have an old block with liboratories of Chemistry, physics and IGNOU office ; a teaching block with classrooms, a new administrative block with botany , zoology and computer laboratories.PTA building with big hall and three small rooms and a newly constructed well furnished and ready to used girls Hostel with a capacity of 105 students. There is an automated library with internet facility having more than 10000 volumes of books. Despite the paucity and inadequacies of class rooms, the college is running 29 options in Arts, two in Science, one in Commerce and M.A in Economics and Political Science . The college has also started BCA and PGDCA classes as self financing courses and in the ensuing session the college will also start BBA & MCA, on the same pattern .
